چکیده

conclusions se supplementation can increase plasma se concentration and rbc gsh-pxs activity in patients with different stages of ckd. background plasma selenium (se) concentration and glutathione peroxidase (gsh-pxs) enzyme activity of the patients with chronic kidney disease (ckd) are usually lower than healthy individuals; however, the effect of se supplementation on the gsh-pxs activity in those patients remains unclear. objectives this study aimed to assess the effect of se supplementation on plasma se concentration and red blood cell (rbc) gsh-pxs activity in patients with different stages of ckd. patients and methods in this randomized clinical trial, forty-five patients with ckd who attended in a nephrology clinic were recruited. the patients were randomly allocated into three groups according to their creatinine clearance rate and were supplemented with daily se 200 mcg for three months. plasma se concentration and rbc gsh-pxs activity were measured in each patient at the beginning and at the end of the study. this clinical trial was registered in the iranian registry of clinical trials (www.irct.ir) with registration number id of irct201305318501n2. results plasma se concentration and rbc gsh-pxs activity increased significantly in all three groups of patients with ckd (p < 0.05). there were no significant differences between three groups regarding baseline plasma se (p = 0.268) and rbc gsh-pxs activity (p = 0.741).

Selenium supplementation to chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis does not induce the synthesis of plasma glutathione peroxidase.

BACKGROUND Numerous authors have shown that selenium (Se) concentration and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in plasma of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are lower than in healthy subjects, but there are only few publications on the level of GSH-Px protein in those patients and no reports on the effect of Se supplementation to HD patients on the level of this enzyme. SUBJECTS AN...

The effect of lactulose supplementation on fecal microflora of patients with chronic kidney disease; a randomized clinical trial

INTRODUCTION Lactulose is a prebiotic with bifidogenic and urea reduction effects. It can improve Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli counts in healthy humans and it may possibly have similar effects in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of lactulose on fecal microflora of patients with CKD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty-two patients with stages 3 and 4 of...

Effect of Mineral Supplementation on the Selenium Concentration and Glutathione Peroxidase activity in Cattle and Camels

Five camels and 5 cows were fed with a similar basal diet for six months. They received oral trace element supplementation for 3 months (day 22-112). The supplementation included zinc, copper, selenium, manganese, iodine and cobalt, and corresponded to twice the daily requirement generally recommended for cows. Plasma selenium concentration was significantly lower in the camels (20 ± 2 ng/ml) a...

Selenium supplementation of Chinese women with habitually low selenium intake increases plasma selenium, plasma glutathione peroxidase activity, and milk selenium, but not milk glutathione peroxidase activity.

Twenty-one pregnant women living in Xichang County, China, a selenium-deficient area, were divided into two groups and given either a placebo (n = 10) as yeast or selenium-enriched yeast tablets (n = 11) to provide 100 microg selenium per day. This supplementation was begun the last trimester of pregnancy and continued for 3 months after parturition. Plasma selenium levels and glutathione perox...
